.03 Term of the Month: “PAID SEARCH”
Paid search is when online advertisers bid on search engine or search directory queries and pay a fee whenever someone clicks on their online ad. In essence, the highest bidder on a particular keyword has its ad show up first on the list. For example, go to Google.com and search for "fishing supplies." The "sponsored links" in the right hand column (such as "basspro.com") are paid search ads.
As of 2005, paid search is about a $5 billion market and is expected to double by 2010 (according to Park Associates). When it comes to Internet advertising success, audience reach is the most important factor. The more visitors to the site, the more opportunity to generate revenue. Also as of 2005, Yahoo has the top audience, with 103.8 million unique visitors in November, followed by MSN with 96.1 million visitors, according to Nielsen/NetRatings. Google is third, with 85.5 million visitors.

.04 How Women and Men Use the Internet
Women are catching up to men in most measures of online life. Men like the internet for the experiences it offers, while women like it for the human connections it promotes.
A wide-ranging look at the way American women and men use the internet shows that men continue to pursue many internet activities more intensively than women, and that men are still first out of the blocks in trying the latest technologies. At the same time, there are trends showing that women are catching up in overall use and are framing their online experience with a greater emphasis on deepening connections with people.
Some highlights from a new report show how men’s and women’s use of the internet has changed over time:
- The percentage of women using the internet still lags slightly behind the percentage of men. Women under 30 and black women outpace their male peers. However, older women trail dramatically behind older men.
- Men are slightly more intense internet users than women. Men log on more often, spend more time online, and are more likely to be broadband users.
- More than men, women are enthusiastic online communicators, and they use email in a more robust way. Women are more likely than men to use email to write to friends and family about a variety of topics: sharing news and worries, planning events, forwarding jokes and funny stories. Women are more likely to feel satisfied with the role email plays in their lives, especially when it comes to nurturing their relationships. And women include a wider range of topics and activities in their personal emails. Men use email more than women to communicate with various kinds of organizations.
- More online men than women perform online transactions. Men and women are equally likely to use the internet to buy products and take part in online banking, but men are more likely to use the internet to pay bills, participate in auctions, trade stocks and bonds, and pay for digital content.
- Men are more likely than women to use the internet as a destination for recreation. Men are more likely to: gather material for their hobbies, read online for pleasure, take informal classes, participate in sports fantasy leagues, download music and videos, remix files, and listen to radio.
Still, data shows that men and women are more similar than different in their online lives, starting with their common appreciation of the internet’s strongest suit: efficiency. Both men and women approach with gusto online transactions that simplify their lives by saving time on such mundane tasks as buying tickets or paying bills.
Men and women also value the internet for a second strength, as a gateway to limitless vaults of information. Men reach farther and wider for topics, from getting financial information to political news. Along the way, they work search engines more aggressively, using engines more often and with more confidence than women.
Women are more likely to see the vast array of online information as a “glut” and to penetrate deeper into areas where they have the greatest interest, including health and religion. Women tend to treat information gathering online as a more textured and interactive process – one that includes gathering and exchanging information through support groups and personal email exchanges.

.05 Online Dating: Here Comes Valentine's Day!
With the turn of the New Year we are quickly met with yet another opportunity to leverage the Internet for a variety of business, advertising, and communication opportunities to build relationships on multiple levels.
- It is estimated that the financial growth of online dating will reach $642 million in 2008. (Source: Jupiter Research)
- Two thirds of singles in Britain looking for love turned to electronic dating agencies in 2005
(Source: The Sydney Morning Herald)
- On average, those paying for online dating services spend a total of $239 per year. (Source: Jupiter Research)
The online dating industry was worth over $398 million in 2004 and this is expected to almost double by 2008. This literally equates to tens of millions of people now using online dating services. An estimated 1 in 5 Americans are signed up to an online dating service meaning that, theoretically, if you're after a new date or just making new friends, you can have the pick of the bunch! In practice, despite what many dating related sites would have you believe, it's not always that simple.
There are more men using online dating services than women. This creates a slight imbalance, which can be a problem. Of course, if you're a straight woman then this is great. If you're male than it's a good idea to choose one of the larger dating services that are likely to have a greater proportion of ladies, to save disappointment.
The next problem with online dating is the number of seemingly unattractive members they harbor. Don't let these first impressions put you off though. Most dating services do have a good number of incredibly attractive members that, perhaps, have hectic life styles and so can't afford the time to date in a conventional way. Get using the search features to find them, because they ARE there… somewhere.
Dating profiles, where "slim" means "average build" and "average build" often means "overweight." Of course this is NOT always the case, but when reading through dating profiles, always - always - read between the lines. People lying in their dating profiles is the most annoying and sometimes dangerous aspect of the online dating scene.
While women tend to be economical with the truth about their looks, men are more likely to lie about their availability. Dating services are commonly used to move on from one "almost ex" partner to a new partner. Sometimes a member may even be married and yet still falsely indicate in their profile that they're single. This is something that many dating services are cracking down on. Some dating services even ban married people from using their services and will even prosecute members that profess to be single when in fact they're married.
People posting photos of other people is also a problem. To combat this problem Match, for example, now offers a "certified photo" process where users can get their photos professionally taken and certified with a stamp to indicate an authentic photo.
All in all, it's reassuring to see the dating services are taking the problems seriously and putting features in place to enialate them for good. However, these problems only go to show how mainstream online dating has become and, as in real life, with visulance and care, it's easy for everyone to enjoy online dating.
